The Marsh Novice’s Chase is the opening race of the Cheltenham Day 3, and one of the youngest races of the Festival. This Grade 1 race is open for five-year-olds or older, and it lasts for about 3975m (2m 3f 168y).

In this race, horses and their jockeys must jump over 17 fences, which isn’t an easy task. To become eligible, horses must meet the weight restriction of eleven stone and three pounds or eleven stone four pounds for 6-year-olds.

At Cheltenham 2022, the Marsh Novices’ Chase will boast a prize fund of £150,000. Nice motivation to start the Cheltenham St. Patricks Thursday with style, huh?

Looking into the Cheltenham Day 3 Odds, Bob Olinger could be the ante-post selection to beat.

The Pertemps Network Final

Favourite Mrs Milner

The second event of Cheltenham Day 3 is the Pertemps Network Final — a Grade 3 race open for five-year-olds or older. It features 12 fences distributed over 2m 7f and 213 y. Since it’s a handicap race, the weight restrictions are decided by the handicappers.

Barry Geraghty won the 2019 race with his impeccable 8-year-old Sire Du Berlais. Jim Wilson and Davy Russell are the most successful jockeys this race has ever seen, with three wins apiece. Whoever wins it this year will go home with a staggering £100,000.

Mrs Milner was the winner of this race in 2021, as the Paul Nolan trained horse won by five lengths from The Bosses Oscar.

The Ryanair Steeple Chase

Favourite Allaho

The Ryanair Steeple Chase made its debut in 2005 when the Festival grew from three days to four. Run over around 2.5 miles, the race is considered as an easier alternative to the Gold Cup.

It’s maybe a less significant race but it’s the one that attracts high-quality fields nevertheless. Alongside The Stayers’ Hurdle, Ryanair Chase is considered to be one of the two top races on Cheltenham St Patricks Thursday.

The Ryanair Chase is also a top-tier horse racing event, and the market regularly changes throughout the season. Make sure you keep your eyes peeled on the Cheltenham Day 3 Race Card to find out everything about the race.

The previous three races were won by 7-year-olds (or older). Frodon, Balko Des Flos, and Un De Sceaux have captured wins in 2019, 2018, and 2017, respectively. This year, it will probably come down to Defi Du Seuil, A Plus Tard, and Min.

The Ryanair Chase, also known as the Festival Trophy, is one of the most prestigious Cheltenham Day 3 events. Here, five-year-olds (or older) have to run over 2.5 miles and overcome 17 fences. Until 2008, the Ryanair Chase had been a Grade 2 race, but it was then upgraded to Grade 1.

With all the action going on at this race, it seems like a good decision.

The 2022 Ryanair Chase features a massive purse of £350,000.

When it comes to jockeys, Ruby Walsh is the all-time record holder with four wins here. As for trainers, Paul Nicholls leads the pack with three victories.

According to bookmakers, Allaho is the clear favourite at present to claim back-to-back wins.

The Paddy Power Stayers’ Hurdle

Start Time 3:05 pm
Distance abt 3m
Type of Course New
Number of Fences 12
Favourite Flooring Porter

When it comes to Cheltenham Day 3, it doesn’t get much better than The Paddy Power Stayers’ hurdle. This race is a treat for the senses, mainly because it’s the longest race in the entire National Hunt Calendar. It’s open for four-year-olds or older that have to run for almost three miles and overcome 12 hurdles.

Four-year-olds must weigh eleven stone, while five-year-olds or older need to weigh eleven stone ten pounds. The fastest horse and its jockey will earn a mind-boggling £325,000, which is how much money goes to the winner.

Paisley Park was the clear favourite to win the race in 2021, but he was well-beaten by Flooring Porter. Thyme Hill pulled out of the race on the day, but is already among the heavy favourites to win the race in 2022.

The Brown Advisory & Merriebelle Stable Plate

Start Time 3:40 pm
Distance 2m abt 5f
Type of Course New
Number of Fences 17
Favourite The Shunter

Also known as the Mildmay of Flete Challenge Cup, Festival Plate is the fifth race of Cheltenham Day 3. Despite being a Grade 3, the race doesn’t lack in quality. It’s quite a challenging race with 17 hurdles placed over 2,5 miles racetrack.

It’s open for five-year-olds that must meet the weight restrictions put forward by the handicappers.

Very few jockeys managed to win here more than once. Fred Winter is the most successful one with three wins. As for trainers, Nicky Henderson, Bobby Renton, and Martin Pipe all have three Stable Plate wins.

It was a late market mover that claimed the victory in the 2021 renewal as The Shunter beat Farclas by three lengths to claim the lucrative victory. The Emmet Mullins-trained horse started the race at 9/4, despite being much bigger than that just two weeks earlier.

Favourite Tellmesomethinggirl

The penultimate race of Cheltenham Day 3 is the Mares Novices’ Hurdle. This Grade 2 race was introduced in 2016, making it the youngest race at the Festival. Four-year-olds and older are eligible to compete over a 2m 179y track with 8 fences. There are weight restrictions for five-year-olds or older — they can weigh up to eleven stone two pounds.

Since the race was introduced relatively recently, no one managed to establish any kind of significant record. Ruby Walsh won the first two races, whereas Willie Mullins was the trainer of all four winners.

Last year, Noel Fehily emerged victorious, winning £50,643. This year, the prize purse is a bit higher — £90,000.

Tellmesomethinggirl was the popular winner of the 2021 race for jockey Rachel Blackmore. Trainer Henry De Bromhead ended Mullins’ dominant record in this race by having the first two in the race. Magic Daze finished five and a half lengths behind the winner.

The Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup

Distance 3m abt 2f

Number of Fences 21
Favourite Mount Ida

We wrap up our Cheltenham Day 3 Race Card with the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Cup — a Grade 2 chase. This race carries a lot of tradition and history that date all the way back to WWI. Namely, a lady called Evan Williams introduced the race in the memory of her deceased broth Kim Muir.

It’s 3m 2f long and includes 21 fences, so it’s easy to deduct where the ‘challenge’ part came from.

Jamie Codd is the most successful jockey with four wins, while a trainer with the most wins is Fred Rimell — four of them. Derek O’Connor is last year’s winner, raking in £41,510. The prize pool for the 2021 event is £70,000, with the majority of the sum going to the winner.

This is one of the hardest races to call on the day at Cheltenham. The winner in 2021 was Mount Ida, for trainer Denise Foster. He won by a commanding six and a half lengths from Cloudy Glen, while Shantou Flyer was back in third.
