Registered as the Dawn Run, the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle is a Grade 2 event at the Cheltenham Festival. It’s staged over the two-mile, one-furlong trip. The Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham has been on the schedule since only 2016, but we have some in-depth information on how it may shape-up in 2022.
Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle Odds Winner – Favourites 2022
This is a competitive race, so the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle favourites 2022 will surely change frequently before race time. As of now, this is how the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle odds stack up.
Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle Tips
Given the nature of the race, the inexperienced contenders for the race are somewhat of an enigma to punters comparing to other races of the Cheltenham Festival. This is very much reflected in the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle odds. With that in mind, producing ante-post Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle tips is a difficult task. However, there are two who look most likely to give the race a good go.
Elle Est Belle
The five-year-old is trained by Dan Skelton and the regular jockey is his brother, Harry. The horse has contested four National Hunt Flat races and won two of those. The mare has an Official Rating (OR) of 123 which is exceptional for a female novice.
Elle Est Belle was beaten by one and a half lengths off level weights in the Grade 2 bumper at the Aintree Grand National meeting in April so is theory second-best on the form.
Elle Est Belle finished third in the Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival, a race won by Sir Gerard who was seven lengths clear at the line, carrying seven pounds more than the mare.
She has no experience of jumping hurdles in a public race but novices are called that because they are known to the discipline. That’s the beauty of novice hurdles because the fastest could be beaten by a better jumper.
Me Too Please
The horse is trained by ALT Moore and has had five jockeys in as many races. Her current rating is 125 so is seen as two pounds superior to that rival.
The 14 and a half lengths defeat Saldier carrying seven pounds more is a decent form at this level and the horse is seen as a more likely winner of the race than Elle Est Belle and both horses are hurdling for the first time so jumping will be key to the outcome.
Me Too Please was just too good for Elle Est Belle in that NHF race at Aintree so is the form pick in the re-match over hurdles. One concern is that the horse is digressing on the ratings so may have peaked two races ago, at Aintree in April. That is the key race so Me Too Please is slightly prefeed on Flat form but the intrigue is the quality of jumping show by each horse over hurdles for the first time.
Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle Cheltenham Festival
This is a fairly new race, its inception coming in 2016. It has been dominated by one stable so far and that may continue in 2022. Certainly, this is the impression we get from the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle odds.
Race History
Novice mares are very hard to judge and so the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle odds market may prove to be competitive. Nevertheless, it was felt that by 2016 a race of this nature was needed at the Festival and indeed it has been a welcome addition.
There was a gap in the programme for this race. A 2-mile, 1-furlong event with just the eight hurdles to take was needed. Mares aged 4+ can enter and in its short history, it has been won by only one trainer; Willie Mullins.
The first five races in its history (2016 to 2020). Were won by Wille Mullins trained runners but Henry de Bromhead trained the winner in 2021. Only horses aged five and six have won this race and the retired Ruby Walsh is the leading jockey with two wins.
Prize Money
The prize for winning the race has not been announced but the winner at the 2021 festival was given over £67,000 in win money.
Famous Winners
This race hasn’t always been easy for punters. The Mares’ Novices’ odds for Willie Mullins’ first and second in 2019 were 50/1 and 66/1 respectively. However, there have also been a couple of real quality mares who’ve landed this event. The inaugural running in 2016 was taken by Limini under Ruby Walsh, while Laurina won in 2018 for Paul Townend.
They were both high-grade Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle winners indeed, Laurina particularly. Her 18-length win is proving hard to beat, though the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle favourites in 2021 may have something to say about that.
Rachael Blackmore was the winning rider on Telmesomethinggirl in 2021.
Records
Only one trainer has won this race so far. Willie Mullins’ five wins in the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham will be hard to beat for a long time. The now-retired Ruby Walsh won the first two as a jockey. He is still the most successful rider, while the highest-rated Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle Cheltenham winner was Laurina. The race was run at 4.50 pm.
