Envoi Allen
This is one of the strongest Marsh Novices’ Chase favourites 2021 for some time now. Envoi Allen is unbeaten in his 11 races under rules. Gordon Elliott’s seven-year-old is already a dual Cheltenham Festival winner, having taken the 2019 Bumper and last year’s Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle.
This fantastic bay gelding remains in terrific form after landing his third chase win at Punchestown in January and is very much on track.
As far as Marsh Novices’ Chase tips go, this chap is already at the top of many pundit’s lists. The last remaining doubt, however, is whether he will stay the two-and-a-half miles. The New Course is tough against better opposition, while he’s a very short price to -get the job done.
Energumene
As well as Gordon Elliott, Ireland’s other powerhouse stable representative is in the race with another of the Marsh Novices’ Chase favourites 2021. The brilliant Willie Mullins is the trainer in question who could be represented by Energumene, an inexperienced but vastly improving chaser. The seven-year-old has so far been ridden to great effect by Paul Townend in his unbeaten chase career. That said, he has done some of his best work over shorter trips.
Energumene was a three-mile winner in the point-to-point scene and did stay 2½ miles easily on heavy ground at Gowran in November, so there’s every chance he will be at home here. He remains a more than worthy candidate and his Marsh Novices’ Chase odds reflect that.
Marsh Novices’ Chase Cheltenham Festival
The Marsh Novices’ Chase at Cheltenham is a relatively new race at the Festival. Already though it has been used to springboard the careers of great chasers such as Vautour, Yorkhill and Defi Du Seuil. The prize money is excellent for the event as it keeps the big guns interested.
Race History
The Marsh Novices’ Chase was introduced and is still registered, as the Golden Miller Chase. It arrived at the Festival in 2011 and was upgraded to its current Grade 1 level in 2014. It had long been felt that a top-class, two-and-a-half-mile novices’ chase was needed. It’s already been of great benefit to many horses.
There are a number of potentially top-drawer young chasers who don’t have the speed for the Arkle. They often don’t have the stamina for three miles either which has led to the emergence of some fantastic Marsh Novices’ Chase Cheltenham winners already.
Prize Money
Prize money is a big draw here, something highlighted by the Marsh Novices’ Chase odds which show some top-level animals entered. Prize money is a little down in 2021. The fund here though is still a tempting £131,000 for 2021 running.

Notable Marsh Novices’ Chase Cheltenham winners include Vautour. He was trained by Willie Mullins who will no doubt have one of the Marsh Novices’ Chase favourites 2021. Vautour went on to finish second in the King George before returning to Cheltenham to land the Ryanair Chase.
Defi Du Seuil was another top-notch Marsh Novices’ Chase Cheltenham winner. Landing this in 2019, he has since won the Tingle Creek, the Clarence House and was favourite for last year’s Champion Chase.
Records
The Marsh Novices’ Chase Cheltenham spectacular, as it already is, has not had much time to settle down. That said, the combination of trainer Willie Mullins and jockey Ruby Walsh managed to win it three years in a row. Vautour, Black Hercules and Yorkhill all won before Walsh’s retirement from the saddle.
The trainer had already won it with Sir Des Champs. He is the leading handler with four wins. Those looking for basic Marsh Novices’ Chase tips don’t need to look too much further than the master of Closutton.
