The Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle odds are very cramped. Until the final declarations are available, we will not know any definite competitors. Odds are available though and currently, look like this.

Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle Tips & Favourites

This is a very important festival race. Albert Bartlett winners tend to go on to be very good stayers. Whether this means remaining over hurdles, or one day contesting the Gold Cup, winners in this race need to stay in your notebook.
At this early ante-post stage, Albert Bartlett odds are very tight. That said, a couple of leading contenders find themselves at the top of the market and make up our early Albert Bartlett tips.

Kilcruit

This is not Kilcruit’s only target. He may end up here however, as trainer Willie Mullins has a very similar type in Sir Gerhard and he may well want to keep them apart.

Kilcruit has close form with Sir Gerhard. After losing out to his stable companion in the Champion Bumper in 2021, he stayed on very well to get revenge at Punchestown. That staying power may convince Willie Mullins to go for this three-mile race in which he may have the assistance of leading jockey Paul Towndend.

Classic Getaway

Another contender, another Willie Mullins horse. This trainer dominates Cheltenham and this horse has even more potential over three miles.

On only his first ever start under rules, Classic Getaway landed a 2½-mile bumper on heavy ground at Tipperary. Three miles may one day prove to be his absolute minimum, so it’ll be interesting to see how he gets on over the course of the season.

Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle Cheltenham Festival

The Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham hasn’t been around that long. In its 15 years, however, it has already created a great impression. Some top horses have already won this event. As a Grade 1 race, those topping the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle odds will need to be top-class.

Race History

Previously, there had been no novice race over three miles. When the Festival was extended to four days in 2005 however, the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at Cheltenham Festival was introduced. It was inaugurated as the Spa Novices’ Hurdle but is now synonymous with its sponsor.

For its first three runnings, the race was staged at Grade 2 level. It was upgraded in 2008 when the new sponsor came on board. Now, we expect the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle favourites in 2021 to be among the best-backed horses of the meeting.

In its early years, this event was run as a Grade 2 race. It was upgraded to Grade 1 level in 2008. For the 2022 renewal, its fair to say all the top trainers will be represented among the favourites in what is now a very important race.

Prize Money

At £96,000 this race remains very valuable. Prize money levels haven’t been announced for 2022, however, it’s hoped they will rise now that Cheltenham is allowed crowds once more.

Cheltenham will once again be very keen to up purses for races like this. With competition from the Dublin Racing Festival, a big bump is needed to ensure the best runners keep coming to the race.

Famous Winners

2011 winner Bobs Worth is a notable former champion. As the 15/8 favourite, Bobs Worth was one of the main Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle tips and he did not disappoint. Nicky Henderson’s gelding then came back a year later to win the RSA Chase, and again in 2013 to land the Gold Cup no less.

As if to prove the worth of this race, a similar pattern emerged more recently. Minello Indo won this race in 2019 as a 50/1 shot, not considered one of the main Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle tips at the time. He did come back last year to be very narrowly beaten in the RSA Chase and is now second-favourite for the Gold Cup.

In 2020, Monkfish landed this race and added his name to a fine list of famous winners. He went on to win once again at the 2021 festival, and is now a leading fancy for the Gold Cup in 2022.

Records

This race is still in its infancy however patterns are emerging. Tony McCoy was successful three times in the saddle, though of course is now retired. Training honours are shared. Jonjo O’Neill and Willie Mullins have each won two, the latter having a few Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle favourites in 2021.

Patterns are beginning to change in this race with essentially old and new eras crossing over since its inception.

The great AP McCoy rode three winners before retiring. Willie Mullins shares top training honours with Jonjo O’Neill (two wins each), with Mullins bound to add more. As such, it’s easy to see Paul Townend becoming top jockey in Albert Bartlett race history very soon and he’ll no doubt have a top ride in 2022.
