Zanahiyr
Very definitely the top Triumph Hurdle Cheltenham contender from an early stage, this one represents Gordon Elliott’s yard and is three from three over hurdles. A son of former top-class flat horse Nathaniel, he is obviously very well-bred and particularly stood out on his second start over hurdles when slamming his Grade 3 field at Fairyhouse.
He won easily over Christmas time to keep his prep up to scratch, but his form so far both on the flat and over hurdles has shown him to have a liking for soft ground. If good weather arrives before the Festival, Zanahiyr’s Triumph Hurdle odds may yet increase.
French Aseel
There could be some serious improvement to come from French Aseel. Only an average flat horse in France, he made a taking hurdling debut in Ireland for Ellmarie Holden and is now in the Willie Mullins’ yard.
That move has meant a contraction in his Triumph Hurdle odds, a move that could continue with another good prep run. French Aseel looks to be an ideal Triumph Hurdle Cheltenham type, and in terms of potential improvement he stands out at this stage.
While he appeared not to beat much at Leopardstown, he did it very impressively and will now be prepared alongside some of the best horses in the business. His current Triumph Hurdle odds are probably about right.
Triumph Hurdle Cheltenham Festival
The Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham is one of the most eagerly anticipated races. The market is huge, Triumph Hurdle favourites in 2022 likely being some of the best horses of the week. This is a race full of history, some real superstars having taken it over the years.
Race History
Although not originally at Cheltenham, this race was established back in 1939. The Triumph Hurdle at Cheltenham first took place in 1965 and is now traditionally run as the first race on the final day of the Festival.
The event is exclusively for juveniles, but they are all potentially top-class and often go on to compete in the Champion Hurdle which is reflected in the Triumph Hurdle odds. Four horses have won this race before going onto Champion Hurdle glory in fact; Clair Soleil, Persian War, Kribensis and Katchit.
Prize Money
Prize money in 2021 was set at £92,000. This will be the minimum figure for 2022, though with crowds allowed back into Cheltenham it is hoped prize money levels will increase further.
Famous Winners
As we’ve already mentioned, four excellent Triumph Hurdle Cheltenham winners went on to land the Champion Hurdle. Clair Soleil, Persian War, Kribensis and Katchit were all fantastic hurdlers, yet all lie in the shadow of one former winner of this race.
The great Tiger Roll was a 10/1 shot in the Triumph Hurdle odds when he landed this race back in 2014 which seems incredible now. The Tiger has of course since gone on to win more Festival races and two Grand Nationals since then, marking him out as one of the greatest National Hunt horses of all time.
Although the last few Triumph Hurdle winners haven’t gone on to the absolute stardom of Tiger Roll, they’ve all been decent. Defi Du Seuil and Pentland Hills in particular were famous winners of this race at the festival.
Records
Barry Geraghty was a master around Cheltenham, and he is the leading rider with 5 wins in the race. By 2015, many Triumph Hurdle tips surrounded his being on board and he did indeed win in 2015 and 2016.
Trainer Nicky Henderson has won an amazing 7 runnings of this event, two of them ridden by Geraghty. Many bookmaker’s Triumph Hurdle odds change simply because trainers like Henderson have their name attached to them.
